UK Tights needed an intern, who could open their business to social media

UK Tights is an online retailer based in Cheshire, South of Manchester, UK, selling 60 brands of tights and legwear to a global B2C market. Marta Rodriguez studied her Masters in Marketing on Salford Business School and did a 3 month internship of 3 days a week with UK Tights. Her placement was in the marketing department; however Marta managed to work across multiple departments to provide quality content for their social media platforms and website.

With a highly related dissertation topic, UK Tights could benefit from her knowledge

Marta was already working on a university project as part of her MSc Marketing looking at how companies can measure their online performance through their website. Marta Rodriguez’s internship also helped UK Tights by analysing online viistors traffic, online customer behaviour through demographical and geo-demographical parameters and the way that customer’s respond to a variety of targeted marketing.

Through this she could apply the insights to create the social media strategy for a company and how to target the customer base most efficiently. UK Tights needed a person, who was passionate about social media and could use the learned skills to implement and build strategies that could take the company in to the digital world their customers were in.

Search and Social Media Marketing project helping Marta to develop her skills

As part of her MSc modules the skills were developed during the Search and Social Media Marketing module which allowed Marta to develop her search engine optimisation (SEO) and socila media optimisation (SMO) skills. During this module, Marta was working as part of a team for ENER-G Internal Marketing Campaign which was again a live company interaction which allowed her and a team of students to develop a brief which had the following objectives:

  • Create something exciting / interesting for employees to help them understand what each of the businesses within the ENER-G group does
  • Improve employee understanding of ENER-G
  • Generate employee interest in other business other than their own
  • Generate ‘chatter’ from employees around ‘what we do’
  • Improve employees confidence to talk about what other companies in the group do

This module offered Marta to advance her personal interest as well as ability to specialise during her internship. Marta was able to practice and advance her knowledge in the area of Digital Marketing and benefit herself as well as the company she was working for.

Marta’s objectives were to take her knowledge in to practice and develop her skills

It was essential for Marta to take her academical knowledge in to practice in a place, where she had the freedom to explore several platforms and strategies for the company. In this way she could accomplish her main objective of getting a full time job after completing her Masters degree.

The key tasks assisted her in to gain skills within social media management, but also to develop areas UK Tights had not explored before, like blogging to reach their online customers and posting content, which the target market could interact with. These tasks have also increased the motivation for finishing her degree with a great positive energy due to understanding the taught theory better.

Marta was the winner of The Little Chip Placement Apprenticeship #BigChipWinners winner 2015! Read about this amazing intern here.
